Model Train Scale Sizes

Model Trains : A Hobby Or A Passion ? by Johnathan Gilbert
Railway modelling or Model Railroading is a hobby in which the whole railway transport system is created at a reduced scale. This includes the landscape, trains, tracks, streetcars, people, lights, every aspect of the system. The people who practise this hobby are called modellers. The first models were very crude in design. The modeller s today create model railway layouts that are much more realistic depicting real locations and eras in history. The modellers may maintain life size models or large enough to actually ride. Most modellers maintain model railway layouts in miniature. They collect trains, build landscapes for the train to go through, in other words operate a railroad just like in real life.
The model railway layouts are made in various designs. It could be an oval or a circle n shape or even just like it is in real life only much reduced in size. There exist museums and clubs that promote this hobby. Clubs often display their model railway layouts to the public. The ones that are created to ride in are usually hand-built and powered by steam, or run on diesel hydraulic. The engines are powerful to carry people as well. Such railways are called Miniature Railways.
Engine size depends on the scale used. There are myriad scales to select; the miniature railway model is 700 mm which is 27.6 inches that is ridable also scaled as 1:8, the tinier ones doll sized are in Z-scale which is 1:220. Newer scales have come into the list, but these are always being debated over by the modellers. A lot of detailing goes into these models. Some modellers work on the landscape, others on weathering that is making the model trains look like they have worn out just like real trains.
Model railway engines are usually run on low voltage direct current electricity known as DC which is supplied through the tracks, but some are run on alternating current known as AC. Most of the early models were propelled by clockwork mechanism and controlled by the levers which were on the locomotive engine. Other methods to control the models were by putting levers into the tracks which the trains would trigger as they neared the station making it possible for them to stop in time at the right place. Other locomotives especially the large ones use steam. Clockwork run models and steam run trains are still pursued by collectors. Given the amount of attention paid to the details of the model railway layout, one cant help but feel that this hobby at times borders on obsession!!!
