Paper Model Trains

Model Train Track Issue?

I have a Hornby (Jouef) TGV atlantique (20th anniversary) and I have tried to clean the track.
I used sunflower oil on some tissue paper and wiped the tracks. I then wiped off the excess oil with a dry tissue. When I tried to run my train, I think there is too much ’smoothness’ and the track is too slippery, so the wheels just spin really fast on one spot. I even tried reducing the speed but it wont
move unless you nudge it. Even after nudging, it struggles at some points.

Any chance I can fix this?? Will the oil eventually dry out fully and would it all get back to normal??
Im trying to wipe off the oil as best as I can, but is there anything else I can do!??!
Note the train worked perfect before my stupidity.
I tried wiping the wheels too!

PLZ HELP!!!!

Also, is there any way I can make my train go faster without buying expensive equipment? (THIS IS A SIDE QUESTION, MAIN 1 ABOVE!)

Many thanks

Some of the oil has probably rubbed itself onto the wheels as well. You will need to rub down the wheels with emery paper first. Use plenty of small pieces as the oil will foul up this paper so fresh pieces will be needed frequently. Never use normal oils for lubricating model railway engines etc, only a specific model railway lubricant which won’t damage the working parts. When cleaning your track in future you can either use a specific model railway branded ‘track cleaning rubber’ (shaped like a flat rubber/eraser) or emery board (in the first instance try plenty of chemist’s/drugstore emery boards as used for nail or bunion filing etc) for the same reasons for using emery paper on the wheels-to remove excess oils. Take extra care to remove oil and grime from the fiddly bits on points/switchtracks-cotton buts/cue-tips help here. The magnets in the loco’s motor will attract dust and grime (which induce a small static electricity charge) which might draw any attatched oil with it. There is also a cleaning spray which you can buy (again, model railway specific only) to clean the mechanical parts of the engine etc.
