Rapido Trains

Is the espresso the same exact train as the rapido? Is the intercity the same thing as the diretto?

The intercity and diretto only make stops in large cities, right?. So, are they the same?

No they are not. While espresso and Rapido can be considered the same (although there are less and less than these, being substituted by Intercity) and both have a surcharge, Diretto and Intercity are different. Diretto is a local train that does not stop at every station but only at the main cities on short distances (for example, on the Milano Varese segment, about 40 km) a local train will stop about 10 times, a diretto only makes 2 or 3 stops). It does not require a surcharge. Intercity is a long distance train, that only makes main cities stops. For Example, on the segment Milan-Rome, about 600 km, it will stop about every 100 km. It requires a surcharge.
